when you open this virtual pc,click on the virtual pc window.then you will be able to use the mouse.if you need to leave this VPC then press alt+cntl+del from your keyboare,click cancel on the screen appear.and you will be able to use the mouse all over your desctop.thanks to all.

Henk, check if you have ‘Hardware virtualization’ enabled in your VPC VM configuration. I unchecked it and it did the magic.

Greetings

I have tried the variouse options above but with no luck

when i boot my VP with server version installed, i get the following
…..
[0.070000] [] ? start_kernel+0×300/0x37c
[0.070000] [] ? unknown_bootoption+0×0/0×203
[0.070000] [] ? i386_start_kernel+0x9e/0xa9
…..
Then it seems to start, but then end with:
….

[0.073927] Kernel panic – not syncing: Attempted to kill the idel task!

Any adeas of the above?

Why do you all want to get it working so badly? This is an example of why unix based operating systems will never go anywhere. This is supposedly the most windows-like most user friendly unix yet, and I have to drop to boot prompts and screw around with config files to get a mouse to work?

I have better things to do with my time than screw around with an OS install for hours on end.

It simply worked! Here are the details:

Host OS: Microsoft Windows XP SP 3
Virtualization Software: Microsoft Virtual PC 6.0.210.0 (this probably means version 2007 SP1)
Linux Version: Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop i386 (32bit Desktop version)

I got it installed in ~35 minutes. There are a few scary moments that I’d like to tell you about: when you choose “Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer”, the screen goes black with a blinking cursor for about 2 minutes. You’ll then see a message “Initializing ” and then you see garbled graphics for another 2 minutes. Do not panic. Everything went fine after that. I chose default/recommended values for all setup steps except for timezone.

Forget about additions for Ubuntu on Virtual PC. Got the Ubuntu working with Virtual Box and installed their additions =)

how do you get virtual pc additions workingggg ? I am sick of the mouse stuck inside the vpc until I press the alt key

Installed Ubuntu 9.04 under Microsoft Virtual PC (Windows 7), works fine.
However, sharing between the host OS and the VM is incredibly slow. If a mount a smbfs to another machine, the performance is as expected. If if mount it to the host OS, its crawling. Same thing seen the other way around i.e. net use to the VM is also slow.
Any ideas?

When I attempted to boot, it said “An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered.” How do I fix this?

It’s easy to suggest something like VirtualBox, and I’ve even tried it myself and know it to be a good product. VMWare is another solution, for free you can get the VMWare player and download pre-created VM’s with the various LINUX forms.

However many are in a corporate environment where they are restricted on what they can run. They are not allowed to install anything outside of a certain list, thus VirtualPC may be their only option, and hence this post.

For anyone wondering about ‘bouncy mouse issues’:

I had to reinstall my system following an unplanned hardware upgrade. Upon reinstall I found that all of my virtual machines were unusually laggy when responding to input from the keyboard or mouse.

I installed the following updates:

Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
Latest DirectX
Latest Nvidia drivers

…and the issue went away. Unfortunately having put all of the updates on in one go, it’s impossible for me to say which actually fixed it, but hopefully this helps someone.
